Open Scholarship Fellowship

The MSU Institute for Cyber-Enabled Research is seeking applications from MSU doctoral students, postdoctoral scholars, and research staff for the second Open Scholarship Fellowship. In response to the open science requirements from federal agencies such as NIH and NASA, as well as studies showing that open scholarly work has greater impact on research communities, the Open Scholarship Fellowship will focus on the tools and methods that you can use to make your scholarly work more distributed, transparent, and accessible. This fellowship will span the 2026-27 academic year. Fellows will learn what open scholarship is, specific processes and skills that facilitate open scholarship, venues for sharing open scholarship, and how to engage in open scholarship in all aspects of your work. We further note that “open scholarship” is interpreted broadly in this fellowship, and includes research-related subjects (the creation of open datasets, software, and other research products), instructional materials, and outreach materials.

During the fall of 2026, Open Scholarship Fellows will follow the NASA Transform to Open Science curriculum, and attend seminars to discuss aspects of this curriculum and its implementation in their work. Fellows who complete the fall program will be provided an honorarium of $200, receive a certificate of completion from NASA, and will be invited to apply to conduct a project in spring that will make their original scholarly work open. The spring will feature dedicated seminars and workshops led by experts in open scholarship and the sharing of research materials. We estimate that the fall component of the fellowship will require three hours of effort per week, including five seminars, and the spring component will require four to five hours of effort per week, including seminars and workshops every other week. Fellows who complete the spring component will receive a second honorarium of $400, will participate in a symposium to showcase their work, and can request additional non-financial support beyond the end of the fellowship to make their work publicly available.
