Software Carpentry Workshop

This hands-on workshop is part of a series designed for researchers beginning new computation-based projects on MSU’s high-performance computing (HPC) systems. It covers essential skills including data management, using Python tools for data science and version control systems. Participants can choose to also sign up for Day 3 which will cover running jobs on our system, and making effective use of HPC hardware.

This is a hands-on workshop led by Software Carpentry Instructors. Participants must bring their own laptops.

Prerequisites: Programming experience in some language is expected. Participants should be comfortable with general programming concepts such as variables, loops and functions.

Day 1: Data Management
9:00 am: Introduction to Unix: Common commands and navigating the file system
10:00 am: The shell and simple filters: Using and customizing scripts
11:00 am: Break
11:15 am: Exercise
12:15 pm: Lunch
1:15 pm: Version control with Git: Creating repos, making and tracking changes, and collaborating with others
2:30-3:30 pm: Exercise

Day 2: Python Tools for Data Science
9:00 am: Accessing data from common types of data sources
9:30 am: Cleaning and normalizing data: Using control flows to do basic processing tasks

1:15 pm: Exploring Data: Basic statistics and visualizing data with Python
2:30-3:30 pm: Exercise

Day 3 (Optional): Introduction to HPC at MSU

9:00 am: Getting started: HPC system configuration; Connecting and transferring data

10:15 am: Running applications: Compiling and developing code 
11:15 am: Submitting, monitoring and managing jobs
