Position Summary

The core duties and responsibilities of the Assistant Director role include:

  • Supervising ICER staff, including the administration, communications, and system administration teams (12 total full-time staff)
  • Managing ICER projects, including establishing timelines and priorities for teams and individual contributors, to ensure that both short- and long-term objectives are attained
  • Aiding the ICER Director in implementing ICER’s strategic plan and high-level objectives relating to research computing infrastructure and user support
  • Collaborating and liaising with MSU IT Services and Infrastructure Planning and Facilities on shared issues relating to hardware, software, networking, security, and physical infrastructure
  • Supporting the acquisition of new high performance research computing and data systems (including participating in defining requirements, developing Requests for Proposal, meeting with vendor representatives, and interfacing with MSU’s Purchasing team)

ICER is currently using a hybrid working model, where employees are primarily working remotely and are working collaboratively/in-person a minority of the time. ICER is exploring the possibility of long-term remote work as a result of the pandemic and would be willing to discuss in-person, hybrid (partially in-person/partially remote), or fully remote options

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in computer science, information systems, business or a related information technology field, with course work in an information technology specialization related to the area of employment; more than eight years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience including at least three of the following: project management, applications design and programming, data center operations, systems programming, database administration, office automation, production analysis, client computing, consulting services, financial management, long range planning and data security; and management; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with standard software development and project management tools such as Git (including GitHub/GitLab), Trello, MS Project, or Asana.
  • Experience with budget development and budget management.
  • Training in, or professional experience contributing toward the development of, skills such as leadership, project management, conflict negotiation, communication, teamwork, and/or research facilitation.
  • Experience with using or administering high performance computing systems.
  • Experience with proposal development and/or coordination.
