Data Center Progress and New Cluster

We wanted to let you know what is coming in the not-to-distant future regarding computing here at MSU. As you must know, Michigan State University has nearly finished its construction of a new data center, located on the southwest part of campus. When finished, IT Services will begin moving equipment into the Data Center from all across campus. This move should begin in early 2018.

HPC will be buying a new cluster in 2018 to be placed in the new Data Center. We have completed a "Request For Information" process with vendors and expect to submit a "Request For Proposals" around late November. We will be soliciting your input on the new cluster around the November time frame. The goal is to install a new cluster and have it up and running in the Spring of 2018. Once the new cluster is up and running, we will bring down the existing cluster presently housed in the Engineering Building and move it to the new Data Center as well. In this way, we hope to stay in continuous service during 2018 as well as providing improved computing services.

If you have a benchmark or dataset that you would like to contribute to help us evaluate the cluster proposals, are interested in participating in the new cluster purchase via buy-in, would like a presentation on the plans for the new system for you or your department, or if you have any other questions, please contact us.
